Conference activism - Remembrance ceremony for all animals killed by human hand 15th October 2011
Organised by The Department of Sociology Faculty of Arts, Charles University in Prague, Czech Republic
This two-day interdisciplinary conference will critically explore a variety of issues concerning the historic, current, and future situation of nonhuman animals across globally interconnected societies. Adopting a Critical Animal Studies perspective this conference seeks to interrogate not only the ‘question of the animal’ but also, with urgency, the deteriorating lived circumstances of many nonhuman animals. We are especially pleased to be hosting this conference in association with the Institute for Critical Animal Studies (ICAS) as the 2nd Annual European Conference for Critical Animal Studies.
The 2nd annual European ICAS conference is an official pre-event for Minding Animals 2 - which takes place at Utrecht University, The Netherlands, 1-7th July 2012.

About Plenary Speakers:
ELISA AALTOLA has worked as a lecturer and research fellow for a number of years, both in the UK and her native Finland. Her research has concentrated on both analytical and continental approaches to animal ethics, and philosophy of mind as related to other animals. Currently, she is a senior lecturer of philosophy at the University of Eastern Finland, and an adjunct professor (docent) at the University of Turku. Her research interests of late have included the concept of "animal suffering", the philosophical ramifications of direct animal activism, and phenomenological takes on empathy. She has published on Animal Ethics in all the major Environmental Ethics journals and her book Animal Suffering: Philosophy and Culture is forthcoming in 2012.
ERIKA CUDWORTH works in Sociology and Politics at the University of East London, UK. Her interests include multiple inequalities and intersectionality, feminist theory, complexity theory, and human relations with non-human animals, particularly domesticates. Her latest book is Social Lives with Other Animals: Tales of Sex, Death and Love (Palgrave, 2011). She is author of Environment and Society (Routledge 2003) and Developing Ecofeminist Theory: the Complexity of Difference (Palgrave 2005) and co-author of The Modern State: theories and ideologies (Edinburgh University Press 2007) and Posthuman International Relations (forthcoming, Zed, 2011). She is currently undertaking empirical research on companion species and marginalised workers, and thinking about posthuman political representation.
TOM TYLER is Senior Lecturer in Philosophy and Culture at Oxford Brookes University, UK. His published research concerns the use of animals, and the persistent expression of anthropocentric assumptions, within philosophy, critical theory, and popular culture. He is the editor of Animal Beings (Parallax, 2006), the co-editor of Animal Encounters (Brill, 2009), and the author of CIFERAE: A Bestiary in Five Fingers (Minnesota University Press, forthcoming). <http://www.cyberchimp.co.uk/research/>

Remembrance ceremony for all animals killed by human hand 15th October 2011 in Prague
As you have already probably realised Critical Animal Studies conferences are a little different to the standard academic conference. For example, we like to incorporate some sort of political demonstration or performance. So on Saturday evening straight after the first day of conferencing we will be having a remembrance ceremony for animals in Prague. Can we ask then that you wear black or dark clothes on Saturday?
